Stubborn Grip

The iron bites, the stone-cold floor,
The heavy lock upon the door.
I curse the walls, I scream and rage
Inside this dark and lonely cage,
And rattling chains with all my might,
I wail against the endless night.

For years I’ve tested every bar,
And wished upon a distant star.
I’ve blamed the fates, I’ve blamed the sky,
And every soul who passed me by.
My struggle is my only friend,
A story that will never end.

But in a silence, tired and sore,
I feel a pain I’ve not before.
It isn’t from the iron's bite,
But from a pressure, fierce and white.
I trace the ache, I follow slow...
To where my own hands will not go

.And then I see with sudden dread,
The twisted thought inside my head.
The bar I shake does not hold me;
It’s I who hold the cold, hard steel.
These chains are not upon me bound;
My fist is closed their links around.

The lockless door stands slightly wide,
There is no guard, no place to hide.
My knuckles ache, a fearful vow,
The only thing that holds me now.
And freedom, just a breath away,
Is waiting for me to betray
This stubborn grip, this prison I embrace,
And simply open up the space.
