The ones who seem the most devout and good,
Who act in ways they think all people should,
Who sing their songs and kneel on bended knee,
Are not always the people they seem to be.
They’ll take a verse that’s meant to shine a light
And twist its meaning with a solemn might.
They build a cage of what is right and wrong,
And tell you that you simply don’t belong.
They’ll bow their head in well-rehearsed display
And ask their god to wash the guilt away.
They rise convinced their soul has been restored,
A debt repaid, a pardon from the Lord.
But their forgiveness doesn’t help you heal,
The pain they caused you is completely real.
They get to walk away, all clean and new,
While leaving all the damage there with you.
So just be careful in that sacred space,
And look for truth behind a smiling face,
For some will hurt you just to make their case,
Then turn and run to find their saving grace.
